Troubleshooting

Error uploading files with Joomla extension manager

This is an issue which I encounter often when uploading files to my local Joomla installation. After going to the Extension manager -> Upload Package File -> Browse -> Upload & Install, I receive the following error message.

There was an error uploading this file to the server.

The reason for the error is that, if you use XAMPP for instance, it has relatively low default maximum file upload sizes (e.g. 8 MB). To fix this problem, simply go to the root directory of your Joomla installation and open the htaccess.txt file with your favorite text editor (I personally like Notepad++). At the bottom of the file, simply add the following lines:

php_value upload_max_filesize 32M
htaccess

Increasing the maximum file size for uploads to 32 MB should do the trick, otherwise you can increase the value to whatever you like. After you save the file as .htaccess (written just like that, i.e. without any extension)

htaccess

and try to upload the extension file once again, you should get the following message:

error upload succesful
